Hazelnut-Food Components, IgE, Serum
Use
Evaluation of patients with suspected hazelnut-food allergy to one of 4 hazelnut-food components. Hazelnut allergy can occur as a systemic food allergy associated with severe reactions or as oral allergy syndrome related to pollen allergies. Sensitization to different hazelnut components can help stratify the risk of severe systemic reactions.
Special Instructions
Only orderable as a reflex. Testing for the four hazelnut-food components (Cor a 1, Cor a 8, Cor a 9, Cor a 14) is performed if the hazelnut-food specific total IgE is 0.10 kU/L or more, at an additional charge.
Limitations
Negative results for IgE antibodies do not entirely exclude the possibility of allergic responses. Positive results indicate potential sensitization rather than definitive allergy. Cross-reactivity with other allergens can lead to false-positive results, especially in cases of elevated serum IgE levels.
