Hazelnut-Food, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to hazelnut by identifying specific IgE antibodies that may be responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. It can also be used to confirm sensitization before starting immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens, such as insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. It is not suitable for patients who have already been treated with immunotherapy or where identifying allergen specificity does not affect medical management.
Special Instructions
For patients not ordering electronically, an Allergen Test Request form (T236) should be completed, printed, and sent with the specimen. The test is available for order in New York State.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists. False-positive results may occur in patients with elevated serum IgE levels due to non-specific binding. Results should always be interpreted within the clinical context because measurable IgE antibodies may sometimes indicate clinically insignificant sensitivity.
