Hazelnut-Tree, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to hazelnut-tree by detecting specific IgE antibodies. It helps define the allergen responsible for clinical signs and symptoms, confirms sensitization prior to immunotherapy, and investigates allergic reactions' specificity. The presence of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergic disease. However, this test is not useful for evaluating IgE levels in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or where the identification of allergen specificity does not influence clinical management.
Special Instructions
The test requires the submission of a serum sample, preferably in a serum gel container. When collecting samples for more than one allergen, ensure to adjust the total volume accordingly, using 0.5 mL for every five allergens requested. Centrifuge and aliquot the serum into a plastic vial. If not ordering electronically, include a completed Allergen Test Request form with the specimen. Tests are performed Monday through Friday, and reports are usually available within 1 to 3 days.
Limitations
Clinical context is important in interpreting IgE results, as some individuals may have measurable IgE levels without significant sensitivity to allergens. False positives for IgE can occur with exceptionally high serum IgE levels. Results should be considered alongside patient history and clinical presentation. Testing IgE antibodies should not be the sole diagnostic tool, as numerous factors can affect IgE levels.
