Helicobacter pylori with Clarithromycin Resistance Prediction, Molecular Detection, PCR, Varies
Use
This test is used for assessing pure isolates of Helicobacter pylori to predict clarithromycin resistance or susceptibility. It detects the Helicobacter pylori 23S ribosomal RNA gene and the three most common single nucleotide variations (A2143G, A2142G, and A2142C) that lead to resistance to clarithromycin. This helps guide the appropriate antimicrobial therapy for infections caused by this organism.
Special Instructions
This test requires pure isolates of Helicobacter pylori, not mixed cultures. If testing directly from feces is desired, a different test code (HPFRP) should be used. Proper shipping of the isolate is necessary, following the Infectious Specimen Shipping Guidelines. An isolate in pure culture must be submitted for testing.
Limitations
This assay exclusively examines the three most common 23S ribosomal RNA point variants associated with clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori. It does not assess other mechanisms of clarithromycin resistance or resistance to non-clarithromycin antimicrobial agents. Cross-reactivity may occur with non-pylori Helicobacter species. Additionally, other clarithromycin resistance mechanisms or resistances to different antimicrobial agents are not determined by this test. Pure cultures are needed as the organism is fastidious once isolated and may not be amenable to phenotypic susceptibility testing.
