Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Summary Interpretation
Use
This test is a consultative interpretation provided as part of the HBEL1 / Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Evaluation, Blood. It incorporates and summarizes testing performed as well as relevant clinical information to support the diagnosis of hemoglobin disorders. These disorders may involve abnormalities in the alpha, beta, delta, or gamma chains of hemoglobin. Understanding these alterations is critical for diagnosing conditions such as thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies.
Special Instructions
This test is not orderable independently and is available only as a reflex to further evaluate abnormal hemoglobin electrophoresis results under test HBEL1 / Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Evaluation, Blood. A summary interpretation of the results will be provided by a hematopathologist.
Limitations
This test provides a summary interpretation and is not a standalone diagnostic tool. Molecular testing might be necessary to fully assess complex hemoglobin variants. The test requires whole blood preserved with EDTA, and transport conditions must be followed precisely to ensure sample integrity.
