Hepatitis B Surface (HBs) Antigen Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
The test is useful for aiding in the identification of hepatitis B infection in the carrier state. Hepatitis B surface antigen stains the cytoplasm of hepatitis B-infected hepatocytes in a granular pattern, which is indicative of an infection. The complete infective virion includes core double-stranded DNA, specific DNA polymerase, and structural proteins. This test helps identify the surface protein recognized serologically as hepatitis B virus surface antigen.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled, as the PATHC includes pathologist review, charged separately. Proper labeling and digital image access protocols must be followed for accurate processing.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation. It is limited to technical performance of the stain only. Age of paraffin sections and the charge of glass slides can affect immunoreactivity due to environmental factors and may result in inconsistent staining. Stability varies depending on specific antigens, and best practices are recommended for slide storage to ensure test accuracy.
