Hepatitis B Virus e Antigen and Hepatitis B Virus e Antibody, Serum
Use
This test is used for determining the presence or absence of hepatitis B virus e antigen (HBeAg) and antibody (anti-HBe) to monitor the infection status of individuals with chronic hepatitis B. It helps in assessing the infectivity of HBV carriers and monitoring the serological response of chronically HBV-infected patients receiving antiviral therapy. The presence of HBeAg correlates with viral infectivity and replication, while the appearance of anti-HBe suggests recovery or resolution of the infection.
Special Instructions
Includes the Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and antibody (anti-HBe) tests. For proper interpretation, it is important that the date of collection is provided. Separate specimen vials are necessary if ordered with HBVQN / Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA Detection and Quantification by Real-Time PCR, Serum.
Limitations
False negative HBeAg and false positive anti-HBe results can occur in patients taking biotin supplements of 20 mg or more per day. Biotin supplements should be discontinued at least 24 hours prior to specimen collection. Performance characteristics have not been established for patients younger than 2 years, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals. The test is not licensed by the FDA for cord blood or donor screening. Gross hemolysis, lipemia, icterus, or particulate matter in specimens are causes for rejection.
