Hepatitis B Virus Past Exposure Panel, Serum
Use
This test panel is utilized for screening for past exposure to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and determining HBV infection and immunity status. It is useful prior to initiating chemotherapy, immunosuppressive therapy, or organ transplantation, ensuring that patients are properly assessed for the presence of past or active hepatitis B viral infection. This helps in mitigating the risk of HBV reactivation which can occur in carriers under immunosuppressive conditions.
Special Instructions
The testing algorithm includes a reflex test for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) confirmation, which will be performed at an additional charge if the HBsAg test is reactive. The test uses serum collected in a serum gel tube with specific handling procedures to maintain sample integrity. Patients should avoid biotin-containing supplements for 24 hours before collection to prevent interference.
Limitations
The test performance characteristics are not established for grossly icteric, lipemic, or hemolyzed specimens, nor for those containing particulate matter or collected post-mortem. It's crucial to adhere to stable specimen conditions to avoid specimen rejection, and note that the test does not differ between vaccine-induced immunity and recovery from infection, as both may produce a positive anti-HBs result.
