Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) Total Antibodies with Reflex to HDV RNA Detection and Quantitation, PCR, Serum
Use
The test is useful for detecting hepatitis D virus (HDV)-specific total antibodies (combined IgG and IgM) in human serum. It aids in diagnosing concurrent HDV infection in patients with fulminant acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, chronic hepatitis B, or acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B (HDV superinfection). This assay detects the presence of HDV-specific total antibodies in serum, indicating simultaneous acute or chronic coinfection with HBV and HDV, or an acute HDV infection in patients with chronic HBV infection. The presence of HDV antibodies suggests resolved or ongoing infection.
Special Instructions
This test employs a reflex testing algorithm: If HDV total antibodies by enzyme immunoassay return equivocal or positive, HDV RNA detection/quantification will be done additionally. A test request form should be completed if not ordered electronically. Includes SARS-COV-2 testing algorithm PDF which is relevant for context but not specific to this test.
Limitations
Negative results may not exclude HDV infection in early phases or immunocompromised patients. False positives might occur due to cross-reactive antibodies from other viral infections or illnesses. HDV antibodies and RNA can remain in serum after acute infection resolution and in chronic coinfections, possibly complicating interpretations. Performance characteristics are not defined for grossly hemolyzed, lipemic, icteric, or cadaveric specimens, nor those containing particulate matter.
