HIV-1 and HIV-2 Antibody Confirmation and Differentiation, Plasma
Use
This test is used for the confirmation and differentiation of HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies in plasma specimens that show reactive results with third- and fourth-generation HIV serologic assays. It helps to confirm HIV infection and differentiate between HIV-1 and HIV-2, which is crucial for effective patient management and treatment planning.
Special Instructions
This test should not be used as a screening or confirmatory test for blood donor specimens. It is not suitable for follow-up testing of patients with reactive results from any rapid HIV tests except for those reactive by the Determine HIV-1/-2 Antigen/Antibody Combo test on serum or plasma. For specimens from autopsy or cadaver blood sources, the appropriate test is HV1CD / HIV-1 and HIV-2 Antibodies for Cadaveric or Hemolyzed Specimens.
Limitations
A negative result for both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies does not rule out acute HIV infection, as antibodies may not be detectable until 6 to 12 weeks following exposure. Results should be interpreted with caution in patients who have received the HIV-1 vaccine, as vaccine-specific antibodies may cross-react, yielding false-positive or indeterminate results. Assay performance is not established for heat-inactivated or cadaveric specimens and may be affected by hypergammaglobulinemic states, connective tissue disorders, or pregnancy.
