Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Identification of human chorionic gonadotropin expression in neoplasms. hCG is produced by the syncytiotrophoblasts of the placenta and has similar biological properties as pituitary luteinizing hormone. It is involved in stimulating androgen and progesterone production, essential for maintaining pregnancy. Many neoplasms, including choriocarcinomas and adenocarcinomas, may express hCG, making its detection relevant in these clinical contexts.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. The interpretation, if required, should be performed by ordering a Pathology Consultation (PATHC). When ordered with PATHC, immunohistochemistry (IHC)/in situ hybridization (ISH) stains will be performed at the reviewing pathologist's discretion for an additional charge.
Limitations
This test does not include a pathologist interpretation, only the technical performance of the stain. Interpretation should be conducted in coordination with clinical history and other diagnostic tests. The charge of glass slides may be affected by environmental factors, potentially affecting stain quality. Cut paraffin sections' effectiveness decreases over time, and older sections may present reduced immunoreactivity.
