Human Epididymis Protein 4, Serum
Use
Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) is useful for aiding in monitoring patients with treated epithelial ovarian cancer for recurrence or progression. It is not recommended for use as a screening test for ovarian cancer, but it complements CA 125 measurement in post-therapy monitoring of ovarian cancer patients.
Special Instructions
For 12 hours before specimen collection, patients should not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7). If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Oncology Test Request (T729) with the specimen.
Limitations
Results cannot be interpreted as absolute evidence of malignant ovarian disease presence or absence, as mild elevations might be present in benign gynecologic conditions and other diseases. The test should be used in conjunction with other clinical methods. The presence of certain antibodies may interfere in some immunoassays, so laboratory should be notified if results do not correlate with clinical presentation.
