Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Panel
Use
The Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Panel is used to detect specific IgG antibodies in the serum that indicate immune sensitization to various antigens. Elevated levels suggest that the patient has been immunologically sensitized, which is clinically significant for the diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, an inflammatory syndrome affecting the lungs caused by repeated inhalation of organic antigens. These antigens typically include molds, fungi, or thermophilic bacteria found in hay, malts, or air conditioners. By identifying specific antibodies, this test helps in the clinical diagnosis and management of the condition, especially in patients with relevant exposure history and compatible symptoms.
Special Instructions
Blood should be drawn into a red-top tube and can be transferred to a serum gel tube if necessary. Proper centrifugation is required to separate the serum, which should be refrigerated and submitted in a plastic vial. Ensure that the collected serum sample meets the minimum volume requirement for testing to be carried out effectively.
Limitations
The test is highly specific to the antigens tested, and there might be other antigens causing hypersensitivity that are not included in this panel. False-positive results may occur due to cross-reactivity with other antigens not specifically intended to be measured by this panel. Additionally, antibodies may not indicate current disease activity, as they can persist long after exposure has ceased. The test has lower reliability if the serum is hemolyzed, and specimens should not thaw repeatedly to prevent alteration in antigen-antibody reaction.
