Immunofixation Heavy Chain Type Delta and Epsilon, Serum
Use
This test is useful for the identification and isotyping of IgD or IgE monoclonal gammopathy. It is also used for documenting the complete response to therapy in cases where there is an established monoclonal gammopathy consisting of an IgD or IgE heavy chain. Monoclonal gammopathies indicate a clonal expansion of plasma cells or mature B lymphocytes, often associated with conditions like multiple myeloma and systemic amyloidosis.
Special Instructions
Fasting for 8 hours is preferred but not required before specimen collection. The test is performed Monday through Friday, with results typically available in 2 to 7 days.
Limitations
This test does not provide information on more common IgG, IgA, or IgM monoclonal gammopathies, which require separate tests like the Monoclonal Protein Study. It is not a quantitative assay and is specifically for IgD and IgE heavy chains. It should only be ordered on patients with confirmed IgD or IgE monoclonal gammopathy.
