Infectious Mononucleosis, Rapid Test, Serum
Use
The rapid test for infectious mononucleosis is used to diagnose Epstein-Barr virus mononucleosis. This viral illness affects reticuloendothelial tissue, primarily in children and young adults, and causes symptoms such as fever, sore throat, lymphadenopathy, and fatigue. This test detects heterophile antibodies, which can help differentiate infectious mononucleosis from other diseases with similar symptoms.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send the Infectious Disease Serology Test Request with the specimen. The test is available for order to NY State clients, and submissions must be sent in a plastic vial.
Limitations
Approximately 10% of infectious mononucleosis patients may not have detectable heterophile antibodies and might require additional Epstein-Barr virus tests for confirmation. False-negative results may occur and can be due to delayed antibody production. The presence of heterophile antibodies might persist long after symptoms have resolved or appear before symptoms arise, which may lead to diagnostic challenges. Furthermore, heterophile antibodies can be associated with other illnesses like leukemia and viral hepatitis.
