Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors (IMT), 2p23 (ALK) Rearrangement, FISH, Tissue
Use
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are distinctive lesions primarily found in the soft tissue but may also present in other anatomical sites such as the lung and bladder. A subset of these tumors exhibit rearrangements involving the ALK gene at the 2p23 location. Identifying these ALK gene rearrangements helps distinguish IMTs from other similar spindle cell neoplasms, making this test crucial for supporting a diagnosis when used alongside an anatomic pathology consultation.
Special Instructions
This test involves the application of a probe set specific to ALK rearrangement using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). It is important to use formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples for accuracy. Please provide a pathology report along with the sample. If additional probes are needed based on initial results, they will be included in the final report, potentially at extra cost.
Limitations
The test is not FDA approved and should be used as an adjunct to clinical and pathological data. Non-formalin fixatives may affect results and are discouraged. Decalcified tissues have a reduced success rate for FISH analysis, but they can still be attempted. The test does not detect all possible chromosomal abnormalities and cannot exclude the presence of an ALK rearrangement solely based on a negative result.
