Inhibin B, Serum
Use
The Inhibin B serum test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of granulosa cell tumors and mucinous epithelial ovarian tumors. It is also used for monitoring patients with these tumors, particularly those known to overexpress inhibin B. Additionally, this test serves as an adjunct to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) testing during infertility evaluations. Its role in infertility evaluation also extends to assessing ovarian reserve, as inhibin B levels directly reflect the number of follicles in the ovaries.
Special Instructions
The test should be ordered alongside INHAB / Inhibin A and B, Tumor Marker, Serum for initial evaluation when a granulosa cell tumor of the ovary is suspected. If either inhibin A or B are elevated in the results, individual tests such as INHA / Inhibin A, Tumor Marker, Serum or INHB / Inhibin B, Serum should be considered for continuous monitoring. Complete the Oncology Test Request (T729) form if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Inhibin B levels can fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, necessitating careful interpretation, especially in premenopausal women. It should not be used as absolute evidence for the diagnosis of malignant diseases, and results should be considered in conjunction with clinical evaluations and other diagnostic procedures. Variability in testing methodology and potential for antibody interference, such as human anti-mouse antibodies, may affect results. Serial patient monitoring should consistently use the same method to ensure reliable comparison.
