Insulin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for the identification of normal pancreatic islet beta cells and insulin-secreting islet cell tumors. Insulin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas, promoting glycogen storage, triglyceride formation, and the synthesis of protein and nucleic acids. The test uses immunohistochemistry to visualize insulin in tissue samples, aiding in the diagnosis of islet cell tumors and other related disorders.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. It should not be ordered with a Pathology Consultation (PATHC); if ordered together, the technical component stains will be canceled. Digital image access is available for orders placed electronically. Ensure the specimen includes the appropriate labeled envelope for submission.
Limitations
The test is limited to the technical performance of the stain, without pathologist interpretation. Improper specimen collection, handling, or selection could affect results. The antigen stability may vary, as older paraffin sections might lose immunoreactivity. Glass slide storage conditions such as humidity, heat, and exposure to plastics can affect staining.
