Jalapeno/Chipotle (Capsicum annuum) IgE
Use
The Jalapeno/Chipotle (Capsicum annuum) IgE test is used to detect the presence of IgE antibodies specific to jalapeno and chipotle peppers. Elevated levels of specific IgE may indicate an allergic reaction to these peppers, which can cause a range of symptoms from mild to severe in allergic individuals. Determining the presence of specific IgE helps in developing a management plan to avoid allergic reactions by avoiding exposure to the allergen.
Special Instructions
Blood should be drawn in a plain red-top tube, though serum gel tube is acceptable. After spinning down the blood, send 0.5 mL of the serum in a plastic vial, refrigerated.
Limitations
The test's limitations include potential cross-reactivity with similar allergens and the inability to quantify the severity of an allergic reaction. False positives may occur if the patient has been exposed to similar non-allergenic substances or if there is a non-specific binding of IgE. The test results should be interpreted alongside clinical history and symptoms, as an IgE level indicates sensitization but not necessarily a clinical allergy.
