Keratin 5 (KRT5) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Keratin 5 is a type II cytokeratin that dimerizes with the type I cytokeratin 14 forming intermediate filaments in the basal layer of the epidermis. It plays a role in differentiating mesothelioma and squamous cell carcinoma versus adenocarcinoma because it is usually positive in mesotheliomas and negative in adenocarcinomas. This makes it useful in separating mesotheliomas from pulmonary adenocarcinomas.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. If ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, the technical component stains will be canceled. Attach the green 'Attention Pathology' address label (T498) and pink Immunostain Technical Only label included in the kit to the transport container.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. If interpretation is required, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity; best practice is for paraffin sections to be cut within 6 weeks. The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors, altering slide staining. Sending unsuitable slides can result in inconsistent staining.
