Lamb, IgE
Use
Testing for IgE antibodies is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to lamb. It helps in defining the specific allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization before immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, it is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity or in those whose medical management doesn't depend on allergen specificity identification.
Special Instructions
This test must be ordered via an electronic or manual test request form if not ordered electronically. The preferred specimen collection container is a serum gel tube, while a red-top tube is also acceptable. The serum must then be centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial for submission.
Limitations
False-positive results for IgE antibodies may occur in patients with elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Some individuals with clinically insignificant allergen sensitivity might still show measurable IgE levels, making it necessary to interpret the results in the clinical context. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful for patients already treated with immunotherapy if clinical sensitivity or medical management doesn’t depend on allergen specificity identification.
