Legionella Culture, Varies
Use
This test is useful for the diagnosis of Legionnaires disease by identifying Legionella species from respiratory specimens. Infection with Legionella species, including L. pneumophila and related species, can cause pneumonia. The Legionella culture provides a definitive diagnosis when Legionella species are identified, which is critical for appropriate treatment and management of the disease.
Special Instructions
It is crucial to note a specimen source is required for this test. Examination by rapid polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) is recommended to increase sensitivity and provide faster results. If not ordering electronically, complete and include a Microbiology Test Request Form (T244) with the specimen.
Limitations
Although semi-selective media is used, recovery of Legionella may be difficult in specimens heavily contaminated with indigenous microbiota, such as sputum. No growth of Legionella species after 7 days of incubation indicates a negative result. Cultures are incubated for 7 days, and positive specimens will be identified via MALDI-TOF MS or 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
