Lettuce IgG
Use
The Lettuce IgG test is used to detect immunologic sensitization to the food allergen Lactuca sativa, commonly known as lettuce. It is intended to identify patients who may exhibit immunologic responses to this specific allergen, potentially contributing to food-related complaints. The test is useful in special clinical situations for selecting foods to evaluate through diet elimination and challenge. However, the presence of food-specific IgG is not indicative of a food allergy, merely implying sensitization.
Special Instructions
This test should only be ordered by physicians who are aware of its limitations and the distinction between immunologic sensitization and true food allergies. It is performed Monday through Friday and requires appropriate specimen handling and transport for accuracy.
Limitations
Reference ranges for food-specific IgG tests are not established, and their clinical utility remains limited. The test should not be used as sole evidence of a food allergy, as it only indicates immunologic sensitization. A positive test is not necessarily clinical evidence of food allergy.
