Lime, IgE, Serum
Use
Establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to lime, defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy. This test is also beneficial in investigating specific allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, it is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in patients where medical management does not depend on allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a listing of available allergens for testing, see Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
IgE antibodies tests may show measurable levels in individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens. High levels of serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) can result in false-positive results due to nonspecific binding. Test results must be interpreted in the clinical context to avoid diagnostic confusion.
