Lipase, Body Fluid
Use
This test is useful for determining whether pancreatic inflammation or pancreatic fistula may be contributing to a pathological accumulation of fluid. Lipase is an enzyme that hydrolyzes glycerol esters, and increased levels may indicate pancreatic injury. Measuring lipase levels in body fluids such as peritoneal or drain fluids can identify pancreatic fluid presence in these cavities, often suggestive of pancreatic conditions.
Special Instructions
Date and time of collection along with the specimen source are required. Indicate the specimen source and location on the label. The test is available for order in New York State clients.
Limitations
Results can be affected by improper specimen collection and handling, inappropriate test selection, and interfering substances, such as gammopathy type IgM (Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia) and calcium dobesilate, which may cause unreliable or artificially low results.
