Use
The Lipoprotein Metabolism Profile, Serum, is valuable in diagnosing dyslipoproteinemia, quantifying cholesterol and triglycerides across different lipoprotein fractions (VLDL, LDL, HDL, chylomicrons), identifying lipoprotein-X, and categorizing hyperlipoproteinemias through phenotyping. It's also useful for evaluating patients with abnormal lipid values to identify specific phenotypes, thereby aiding treatment decisions. The test can signal genetic abnormalities in lipid metabolism or transport and helps differentiate primary causes from secondary ones like liver disease and metabolic disorders.
Special Instructions
Ensure fasting for 12 hours before the blood draw, and avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior to collection. Documentation of the patient's age and sex is required. If not ordering electronically, use the Cardiovascular Test Request Form (T724) when submitting specimens.
Limitations
Cholesterol and triglyceride results may be inaccurately lowered in patients with elevated levels of metabolites such as N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (from acetaminophen), N-acetylcysteine, and metamizole. The assay is not FDA-approved, though its performance aligns with CLIA standards.
