Lupus Anticoagulant Profile, Technical Interpretation
Use
The test is used for the technical interpretation of results to confirm or exclude the presence of lupus anticoagulant (LAC), which is an antibody that interferes with phospholipid-dependent coagulation tests. It helps distinguish LAC from specific coagulation factor inhibitors and nonspecific inhibitors, and is particularly useful in investigating a prolonged activated thromboplastin time when combined with other coagulation studies.
Special Instructions
This test should be part of a profile and is not orderable as a standalone test. It is recommended to perform separate testing for serum phospholipid (cardiolipin) antibodies to detect antiphospholipid antibodies that do not affect coagulation assays.
Limitations
The test is not useful for detecting antiphospholipid antibodies that do not affect coagulation tests. False-positive results can occur in patients receiving treatment with heparin, and warfarin or Coumadin treatment may impair the ability to detect more subtle varieties of lupus-like anticoagulants.
