Mackerel, IgE, Serum
Use
The Mackerel, IgE test is used for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to mackerel. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms such as allergic responses and anaphylactic episodes. This test is also useful for confirming sensitization to mackerel prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigating specific allergic reactions to various allergens including insect venoms, drugs, or chemicals. The presence of IgE antibodies is associated with allergic disease manifestations like eczema, rhinitis, and asthma, primarily in individuals predisposed to allergic conditions.
Special Instructions
For a comprehensive diagnosis, it is important to evaluate the clinical history and manifestations along with the IgE test results. Patients should ensure proper specimen collection and handling as per instructions to avoid inaccurate results. An Allergen Test Request form (T236) may be required if not ordering electronically. Various allergens can be simultaneously tested if multiple IgE tests are requested.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful for determining residual clinical sensitivity in patients previously treated with immunotherapy. Individuals with high overall serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) might have false-positive results due to nonspecific binding. The test does not replace the need for a detailed clinical evaluation and should be interpreted in the context of complete medical history.
