Mare's Milk, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to mare's milk and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It is intended to identify allergens responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. This can include confirming sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy or investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, or in patients where medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. For non-electronic ordering, complete and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum, hence test results must be interpreted in the clinical context. False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. The allergens chosen for testing depend on patient age, history of allergen exposure, season, and clinical manifestations.
