Milk, Processed, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is essential for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to processed milk. It helps define the specific allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms of allergic reactions. Additionally, it can identify allergens responsible for allergic responses and potential anaphylactic episodes. This test is also valuable for confirming sensitization before beginning immunotherapy and for investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
Caution is advised as testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in cases where medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. For those not ordering electronically, the 'Allergen Test Request' form must be completed and sent with the specimen.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may show measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum. False positives may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Test results should be interpreted in a clinical context, keeping in mind that IgE levels can also vary due to factors unrelated to allergic disease.
