Monoclonal Protein Quantitation, 24 Hour, Urine
Use
Monitoring patients with monoclonal gammopathies using 24‑hour urine collections. The test quantifies total protein and evaluates protein electrophoretic patterns to identify monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains (M‑spike), aiding in the diagnosis and management of conditions such as multiple myeloma, primary systemic amyloidosis, and light‑chain deposition disease.
Special Instructions
Profile includes PTU3 (Protein, Total, 24 HR, U) and PEU (Protein Electrophoresis, 24 HR, U); reflex MPTU (M‑protein Mass‑Fix, 24 HR, U) may be added if a discrete electrophoresis band is found. Shipping instructions: refrigerate during collection and send refrigerated. 24‑hour volume in mL is required. Aliquot 30–50 mL into plastic 60 mL urine bottle. Additional forms: Renal Diagnostics Test Request (T830) may be needed if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Urine protein electrophoresis alone is not considered an adequate screening for monoclonal gammopathies—reflex Mass‑Fix is performed if a discrete band is identified. Reference values not established for patients younger than 18 years.
