MUM-1/IRF4 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
MUM-1 (multiple myeloma oncogene-1), expressed by the IRF4 gene, is seen in a subset of B cells in the light zone of the germinal center, plasma cells, and activated T cells. It aids in the identification of hematolymphoid neoplasms and melanomas. MUM-1 expression has been reported in melanomas and various hematolymphoid neoplasms derived from these cell types. The test is useful in identifying these disorders and for aiding in the diagnosis.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. It should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as the technical component stains will be canceled if ordered together. For accessing digital images, orders must be placed electronically.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation; interpretation should be performed in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and best practices for storage should be followed. Unsuitable glass slides can result in inconsistent staining due to poor slide surface chemistry.
