Mumps Virus Antibodies, IgG and IgM, Spinal Fluid
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of central nervous system infection caused by the mumps virus. Detection of organism-specific antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may suggest central nervous system infections, although results cannot distinguish between intrathecal antibodies and serum antibodies in the CSF from procedural introduction or blood-brain barrier disruption.
Special Instructions
For ordering this test electronically, the Infectious Disease Serology Test Request form (T916) should be completed and sent with the specimen if not ordering electronically. This test is not available for New York State clients.
Limitations
While the presence of antibodies can indicate infection, it should not be the sole criterion for diagnosis. Results must be analyzed within the context of other clinical and laboratory data. The test cannot differentiate between antibodies produced in the central nervous system and those entering through injury to the blood-brain barrier or lumbar puncture procedure.
