Mumps Virus Antibody, IgG, Serum
Use
This test is useful for determining the postimmunization immune response of individuals to the mumps vaccine and documenting previous infection with the mumps virus in individuals with no record of immunization. Mumps is a contagious disease caused by the mumps virus, which is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family. Infections can result in symptoms such as painful swelling of the salivary glands and complications like orchitis, pancreatitis, and central nervous system disease. Routine immunization of infants with the mumps virus vaccine has decreased mumps cases, but outbreaks still occur.
Special Instructions
Ensure samples are collected and handled properly to avoid diagnostic confusion. Avoid cross-reactivity with unrelated paramyxoviruses by adhering to procedural guidelines for the specific immunoassay used.
Limitations
The presence of IgG antibodies indicates past exposure but does not differentiate between previous infection and vaccination. Early infection samples might not show IgG antibodies. Cross-reactions with other paramyxoviruses are possible but uncommon. Comorbid conditions like recent blood transfusions can affect IgG measurement accuracy.
