MUXF3 (Cross-reactive Carbohydrate Determinant), IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for evaluating the presence of antibodies to cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs), which are associated with broad cross-reactivity with many plant and invertebrate allergens. Although antibodies to CCDs can cause confounding positive specific IgE antibody tests, they are generally not associated with allergenic symptoms. They can falsely elevate IgE levels in patients with broad allergen sensitivity profiles, which are not necessarily clinically relevant.
Special Instructions
This test is not useful for patients who have been treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists. It should also not be used when the medical management does not rely on identifying specific allergen sensitization.
Limitations
Cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants are not generally thought to be clinically relevant, and their presence does not usually give rise to symptoms of allergic reactions. However, their presence can result in broad IgE reactivity that may hinder the identification of specific allergens responsible for symptoms. False-positive IgE results may occur in patients with extremely high serum IgE, due to nonspecific binding.
