Neurofilament (2F11) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for aiding in the identification of neoplastic cells of neural origin or those exhibiting neuronal differentiation. Neurofilament (NF) constitutes the main structural elements of neuronal axons and dendrites. NF subunits are present in neurons, neuronal processes, peripheral nerves, and sympathetic ganglion cells. In brain parenchyma, NF labels the axons of the central nervous system. Within tumors, only neoplastic cells of neural origin or those exhibiting neuronal differentiation have been observed to express NF. Positive immunostaining has been observed in neuromas, gangliogliomas, neuroblastomas, and medulloblastomas. Other tumors that can stain for NF include pheochromocytoma, chemodectomas, and carcinoid tumors.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. It should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. For shipping, attach the green 'Attention Pathology' address label and the pink Immunostain Technical Only label included in the kit to the outside of the transport container.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, it only provides technical performance of the stain. Age of cut paraffin sections can affect immunoreactivity, as stability thresholds vary and are antigen-dependent. It is suggested that paraffin sections be cut within 6 weeks. Environmental factors can also affect the charge of glass slides, altering staining results. Unsuitable glass slides may lead to inconsistencies due to poor surface chemistry.
