Neurofilament (SMI31) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for differentiating neurons, which are neurofilament positive, from glia, which are neurofilament negative. Neurofilament antibody clone SMI 31 reacts with a phosphorylated epitope on neurofilament H and M. It is useful in identifying specific neuronal structures and can stain neuronal cell bodies in certain pathologies.
Special Instructions
This test only includes the technical component of staining and does not provide pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered with Pathology Consultation as these will be canceled if done so. Ensure that digital image access needs are understood prior to ordering, as manual requisition does not provide digital image access.
Limitations
Age of paraffin section can affect staining due to varied stability thresholds. Improper slides or environmental conditions can alter results. It’s important for paraffin sections to be cut within 6 weeks to maintain quality. Pay attention to slide storage conditions to prevent deterioration.
