Use
The NT-Pro B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) test aids in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF) using serum specimens. NT-proBNP is a marker of atrial and ventricular distension due to increased intracardiac pressure. Its concentrations increase with the severity of CHF, as categorized by the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification system. NT-proBNP values provide important prognostic information, especially in patients with renal impairment, offering a high negative predictive value for excluding acute CHF and valuable insights for diagnosing CHF severity.
Special Instructions
Patient's age and sex are required for the test. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Cardiovascular Test Request Form (T724) with the specimen. The test is performed continuously from Monday through Sunday, with results typically available the same day or within 1 to 2 days.
Limitations
Lack of NT-proBNP elevation may occur if CHF is very acute (first hour) or associated with conditions like hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, mitral stenosis, or atrial myxoma. Additionally, the NT-proBNP is more stable in vitro than BNP, and its levels might be affected in patients with renal disease or those on diuretics. Hemolysis in specimens can lead to test rejection, affecting results accuracy.
