Nuts Allergen Profile, Serum
Use
This test is used to establish a diagnosis of an allergy to nuts, identify the allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes, and confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy. It is beneficial in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, it is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in patients where medical management does not depend on identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies provided in the Special Instructions section.
Limitations
There may be false-positive results for IgE antibodies in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum, thus test results must be interpreted in the clinical context.
