OCT3/4 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Octamer-binding transcription factor 3/4 (OCT4), also known as POU5F1, is a transcription factor expressed by embryonal stem cells and germ cells. Staining for OCT4 can aid in the diagnosis of testicular or ovarian germ cell tumors; it is highly specific for germ cell neoplasia, especially seminomas. This test is useful for the identification of germ cell tumors.
Special Instructions
This test includes only technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Any immunohistochemistry (IHC)/in situ hybridization (ISH) stain performed as a part of the PATHC will be performed at the reviewing pathologist's discretion at an additional charge. Clients wishing to access digital images must place the order for IHC stains electronically.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, as stability thresholds vary widely among published literature and are antigen dependent. Environmental factors can affect the charge of glass slides and alter slide staining, which may lead to inconsistent results due to poor slide surface chemistry. Best practices involve minimizing time slides are stored after being unpackaged and limiting exposure to high humidity and heat.
