Olive Tree, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is used to establish a diagnosis of an allergy to the olive tree. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and can identify allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. It is also used to confirm sensitization before beginning immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in those where the medical management does not depend on the identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a comprehensive listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies PDF. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
The test may yield false-positive results for IgE antibodies in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding to allergen solid phases. Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may still have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum. Results must be interpreted in the clinical context.
