Ova and Parasite, Microscopy, Varies
Use
This test is useful for detecting and identifying parasitic protozoa and eggs and larvae of parasitic helminths. These organisms can be found in specimens other than stool, such as colonic washings, duodenal aspirates, and other anatomical site washings or aspirates. Infection with these parasites is often asymptomatic, but signs and symptoms can include cough, fever, bloody sputum, skin lesions, and abdominal pain.
Special Instructions
Specify on the order if a specific parasite is suspected and indicate the source on the label of the specimen. If specimens are suspected of containing tapeworm segments or other adult worms, specific handling instructions apply. For specimens requiring special preservation, use Ecofix or 10% formalin and zinc polyvinyl alcohol (Zn-PVA) as preservatives.
Limitations
This test is not appropriate for the detection of microfilariae, malaria, trypanosomes, or Trichomonas vaginalis. Some strains of protozoa are nonpathogenic, and some helminths may cause little or no illness. Improper specimen collection and handling, as well as inappropriate test selection, can affect the accuracy of the test.
