Passion Fruit, IgE, Serum
Use
The Passion Fruit, IgE test is used to establish the diagnosis of an allergy to passion fruit. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms in patients presenting with potential allergic reactions. The test aids in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes and in confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy. It is particularly valuable for clinicians investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to allergens, insect venom, drugs, or chemicals.
Special Instructions
For specimen collection, a serum gel is preferred, while red top tubes are acceptable. After centrifugation, the serum should be aliquoted into a plastic vial. The volume required is 0.5 mL for every 5 allergens requested.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have undergone immunotherapy as part of their treatment process to determine any residual clinical sensitivity. It is also not beneficial in cases where patient management does not hinge on identifying allergen specificity. False positive IgE antibodies may occur in individuals with significantly elevated IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding, and some individuals without clinical symptoms may still show positive results.
