Pecan-Food, IgE, Serum
Use
The Pecan-Food, IgE, Serum test is used to establish a diagnosis of an allergy to pecan-food and help define the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic signs and symptoms. It also identifies allergens responsible for allergic reactions or anaphylactic episodes, confirms sensitization prior to immunotherapy, and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens. This test measures IgE antibodies to assess the immune response to pecan allergens, aiding in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases.
Special Instructions
For optimal specimen collection, the preferred container is a serum gel tube, but a red top tube is also acceptable. It's important to centrifuge and aliquot the serum into a plastic vial promptly after collection. Ensure to send the properly labeled specimen along with a completed allergen test request form when not ordering electronically. Specimens affected by gross hemolysis or lipemia can still be processed; however, other improper collection methods could affect results.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have previously undergone immunotherapy to determine the presence of residual clinical sensitivity. Additionally, in patients where medical management doesn't require identification of allergen specificity, IgE testing might provide negligible benefits. False-positive results could occur in individuals with high total serum IgE (>2500 kU/L), which can lead to non-specific binding in the test phase. Clinical correlation with patient's history and other diagnostic tools are important for accurate interpretation.
