Pepper Bell/Paprika IgG
Use
The Pepper Bell/Paprika IgG test is used to detect IgG antibodies to the pepper bell and paprika antigens. While reference ranges for food-specific IgG tests have not been established, these tests may serve a role in identifying immunologic sensitization by the food allergen in question. They can be used in special clinical situations to select foods for evaluation through dietary elimination and challenge in patients with food-related complaints. However, the presence of IgG is not indicative of a food allergy but merely suggests immunologic sensitization.
Special Instructions
This test should only be ordered by physicians who are aware of the limitations, as presence of food-specific IgG is not evidence of a food allergy.
Limitations
The clinical utility of food-specific IgG tests is not well established. This test measures immunologic sensitization, which cannot be equated with food allergy. The presence of IgG antibodies alone does not confirm a food allergy and further assessment via elimination and challenge is recommended in symptomatic patients.
