Peripheral Smear Interpretation, Whole Blood
Use
Interpretation of a Wright‑stained peripheral blood smear. A hematopathologist reviews the smear and provides an interpretive report of the percentage of white cells and, if appropriate, evaluation of white cells, red cells, and platelets. Useful for detecting disease states or syndromes affecting hematologic cell lines in peripheral blood. Under normal conditions, morphology and proportion of each blood cell type are fairly consistent in age groups, and deviations can indicate hematologic disease. Special Instructions
Only orderable as a reflex following Morphology Evaluation (Special Smear). Additional complete blood count results and reason for referral may improve interpretation. ([qa.testcatalog.org](https://qa.testcatalog.org/show/PINTP?utm_source=openai))
Limitations
No significant cautionary statements are provided specifically; interpretive quality may be compromised by poor smear preparation. A poorly prepared peripheral smear may result in suboptimal interpretation. ([mayocliniclabs.com](https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/test-catalog/overview/71114?utm_source=openai))
