Phencyclidine Confirmation, Random, Urine
Use
This test is utilized for the detection of drug abuse involving phencyclidine, commonly known as PCP, which is an illegal hallucinogenic drug. Detection is critical as PCP affects various neural pathways, interacts with multiple neuronal receptors, and can have severe analgesic, anesthetic, and stimulatory effects. The drug's presence is indicative of its consumption and provides a strong indicator of PCP use, which can yield behaviors ranging from depression to euphoria and violent rage.
Special Instructions
For situations that require chain of custody, a specific kit can be ordered. Additional drug panels and specific requests are available through the laboratory's customer service. STAT requests are not accepted for this test. It is essential to record the urine pH as PCP may be undetectable at alkaline pH levels.
Limitations
The test may yield false negatives if urine pH is not properly recorded, as phencyclidine may be undetectable at an alkaline pH. It is important to follow specimen collection instructions strictly, as improper collection and handling could cause diagnostic confusion. Interfering substances could also potentially affect the test results.
