Phosphatidylethanol Confirmation, Blood
Use
Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a direct biomarker for alcohol (ethanol) intake. It is used to verify abstinence or detect ethanol usage, especially in liver transplant candidates and patients. PEth levels in blood correlate with the amount of alcohol consumed over the past 2 weeks and can be detected up to 2 to 4 weeks after alcohol intake.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
PEth levels should be interpreted cautiously as numerous factors, such as biology and alcohol consumption habits, may influence results. Results should be considered in conjunction with clinical and behavioral data as they alone do not indicate alcohol misuse.
