Phosphorus (Inorganic), Serum
Use
The Phosphorus (Inorganic), Serum test is useful for diagnosing and managing a variety of disorders involving bone, parathyroid, and kidney disease. It measures the inorganic phosphate levels in the serum, which can be indicative of various health conditions such as hypophosphatemia and hyperphosphatemia. Proper phosphate levels are crucial for several biological functions, including bone mineralization, energy metabolism, and enzyme regulation.
Special Instructions
Patient's age and sex are required when ordering this test. If not ordering electronically, accompanying forms like the Kidney Transplant Test Request or Renal Diagnostics Test Request should be completed and sent with the specimen.
Limitations
Phosphorus levels follow a biphasic circadian rhythm, with values typically being lowest in the morning and peaking in the late afternoon and evening. This circadian variation can cause results to fall outside the reference range if not properly timed. Interpretation should account for dietary intake, age, and systemic hormonal regulation, as these factors can also significantly influence serum phosphate levels.
