Pistachio, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to pistachio. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and identifies the allergens responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. It can confirm sensitization prior to immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful for assessing residual clinical sensitivity in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or when the identification of allergen specificity does not influence medical management.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the PDF guidance on Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies. If ordering manually, complete and send the Allergen Test Request form along with the specimen.
Limitations
This test detects IgE antibodies that indicate the existence of allergic disease rather than other causes. It must be interpreted in the clinical context as some individuals with insignificant sensitivity may have measurable IgE levels. False positives may occur in patients with significantly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding. The test is not ideal for determining if residual sensitivity exists post-immunotherapy or for conditions where allergen specificity identification is unnecessary for treatment.
